What to look for when you’re shopping for tops(button downs, t-shirts blazers and outerwear) to make sure what you bring home fits perfectly.


This past weekend I went to dinner with my boyfriend and his best friend Jason. Jason started asking for my advise. He said he has a lot of trouble finding what he needs and usually has to bring a random female friend shopping with him so he knows what he is buying actually fits.

He picked my brain on everything from clothing for his body type, lifestyle, and overall preferences. I was really excited that the conversation had left baseball and was now on a topic that I was an authority on and could easily contribute.  

That brief style review was the reason I made this particular video. I really want to keep the discussion going through my new series 'About The Fit'.

Guys, Let's Hit The Hill

Those of you who see me in the cooler months, running in the park (or simply running errands) know that I LOVE Athleta. Especially their polartec fabrics, they are THE BOMB. I’ve said this for years and now it’s FINALLY happened.

They have created their mens line called Hill City. They have a small rack in store to touch and try on and then, for right now, you can buy it online. Here are some of my favorite pieces.

Come on now, let’s get in formation! I had a great shopping session with a client of mine yesterday. He needed to up level his style for off duty and what better place to go then Club Monaco. A lot of work goes into shopping with a client. Here is a little behind the scene sneak peak of AFTER I’ve pre-shopped and pulled and 30 min BEFORE the client shows up for his shopping session.

One thing I think I'm pretty good at is learning about brands that will help MY CLIENTS look and feel like a boss. Fit is one of, if not THE most important part of wardrobing. You can wear a few thousand dollar outfit but if it's ill fitting you will look AND feel like a schlep. If you've been working with me you know that one of the main reasons I tell you to pass on something(in a store or in your closet) is because it doesn't fit well. 

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with a New York institution in menswear custom tailoring Alan Flusser. I met THE Alan Flusser and his team of well kept and dressed staff. Sitting at this round table of menswear elite was an honor (and not too mention all the sudden super nerve-wracking) to be in the presence of such knowledge and history. 

From the proper amount of break in a pant leg over your oxford to their unique summer weight- wrinkle resistant linen fabrics they really have a unique space in the over-stuffed menswear custom market. When they told me about the content mix in their fabrics I knew this would be the place I can bring clients for their tailoring needs.

"I'm a little late but here. I need a minute to decompress and settle my wrinkled self into the back of the room where no one can see me."

How to pick YOUR Hero

I believe that everyone should have statement pieces. I lovingly call them your “HERO” piece. To me - it’s defined by what your ideal style is like tenfold. It’s something that you don’t wear much but when you wear it you style it with classic staples.

Example—> this emerald green tool Rochas skirt. I styled it with a classic button down from zara (btw) and my go-to dolce vita cap toe perforated oxford’s. Obviously, the hero in this look is the skirt. The supporting players are the button down and the shirt. Both neutral, both extremely reasonably priced (the shoes cost all of $20 at Bloomingdales on deep deep discount YEARS ago).

For menswear I always believe in a GREAT piece of outerwear, shoe and pattern. If you wear suits everyday mix up your solid navy with a pop of (insert something you like here) in your tie or pocket square. If you're in tech and like to be casual then a cool sneaker or awesome hoodie with a graphic will do the trick (check out my last post to find your hero sweatshirt ---> (http://brandweingroup.com/menswear-inspiration/2018/7/22/up-your-sweatshirt-game-menswear-mensstyle-sweatshirt-techstyle-menswearstylist ) . I can't tell you what your hero because everyone's is different. But I will say this -- never wear multiple hero pieces at once. Stay true to the statement you're making and let the piece speak for itself.

I believe that it's OK for guys to wear sweatshirts if they wear the RIGHT one (and the right place and time). As more and more tech companies pop up and the 'casual' work environment becomes a staple it's more likely that you'll want to be casual if you're staring at a computer for 11 hours a day.
